Articles of the Week

Four American Women of Color Navigating Hockey's Whiteness

VP Roundtable: On Race and Representation in Women's Hockey

We’ve picked these two articles from the Victory Press as the Articles of the Week because they’re well-written and thoroughly cover the issue of race in hockey, specifically how it plays out in women’s hockey.

We’re not going to break down these articles, generally we feel like they need to be read without our commentary. However, we did want to provide some framing that’s not explicit in the articles. Although there’s some token mention of the CWHL and Canadian hockey, these articles are very much coming from an American perspective, with a focus on the NCAA, the NWHL, and USA Hockey. In addition, the women in the roundtable have a more recent knowledge of hockey - their focus seems to be 2014 and forward. For instance, there’s mention of HHOF member Angela James in the first article but she doesn’t come to mind when the roundtable lists women of colour.

That said, these are discussions we’re often afraid to have, and the women involved in these articles are well qualified to have them. Hopefully you’ll read both and learn a few things.
