Story of the week
Cassie Campbell-Pascall’s inclusion on HHOF committee a no-brainer - Sportsnet.ca
Cassie Campbell-Pascall’s presence on the committee acknowledges work she’s been doing for years.
“It’s about time” is a clichéd reaction to this sort of news. It’s one I certainly had, but my first reaction was actually: “Okay but what happens when she’s nominated for the Hall herself?”
Cassie Campbell-Pascall answered that question herself in the above article — she’ll leave the room. (The actual process for nominating a member of the committee is article 20 here.) As the only hockey player to captain back to back Olympic gold medal winning teams, and the first woman to commentate a national hockey broadcast, she definitely will be nominated at some point (if she hasn’t already been, the Hockey Hall of Fame doesn’t release details of those who have been nominated but not inducted), either as a player or as a builder.
The same background that will likely see her called to the Hall one day is what makes her such a strong pick for the first woman to join the committee. With over a decade of international experience as a player, Campbell-Pascall has played with and against numerous women who deserve to join the Hall of Fame. She’s familiar with names beyond the Canadian and American stars that garner North American attention. As an Olympic commentator she’s mentioned more than one European player she thinks should be in the Hall, for instance Swedish goaltender Kim Martin Hasson, who led her team to an Olympic silver medal.
Each member of the committee is allowed to nominate one person towards each category (player, builder, official) each year. Everyone knows Hayley Wickenheiser will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in the next class, but hopefully Campbell-Pascall can let one of the men make that nomination while she pushes to fill the often-empty second women’s slot, and also nominates a woman as builder.
Cassie can talk all she wants about looking at players who aren’t women, but since retiring as a player she has often been, as Annie puts it “the woman men’s hockey always calls on when they need someone to be The Woman”. Now, with this job, it’s women’s hockey that needs her to use that clout and be The Woman.
