It’s impossible for anyone who deals with women’s hockey in Canada to acknowledge Black History Month without acknowledging Angela James. James’ actual time on the ice predates my interest in hockey and I’ll be the first to admit I am very, very white and not an appropriate person to give anyone a lesson on the history of black athletes in women’s hockey.

Instead, I point you to the above article, which is generally excellent (although like too many articles it ignores James as a lesbian, another marginalization she had to contend with as a player). Along with giving the numbers of James’ career and the narrative that is trotted out most often, the interview with Sarah Nurse gives a context, on both a personal and more general level, to James’ legacy. Nurse is the first black woman to play hockey for Team Canada at the Olympics and she did it 20 years after James was denied her chance.
