The Toronto Maple Leafs have a chance to clinch 30th place in the NHL. All it would take is either a loss or an Edmonton Oilers win, and last place is theirs.
Meanwhile, in the AHL, the Toronto Marlies have clinched first place. Through 71 games, they have a 51-15-5 record: 107 points, and a .754 winning percentage. They still have five games to go in the regular season, but this is it: nobody can catch them.
A 4-3 overtime win over the Lake Erie Monsters sealed the deal. Mark Arcobello scored the game-winning goal on the power play, assisted by Brendan Leipsic and Josh Leivo. Connor Brown, Ben Smith, and Colin Smith also scored in the win, while Antoine Bibeau stopped 31 of 34 shots for the victory.
The next closest team is the Albany Devils who, with 96 points, can only reach a maximum of 106.
So that's that: the Marlies are regular season champions, and will have home ice advantage throughout the Calder Cup playoffs. That's the one thing they've got left to win.
The Marlies play their final regular season on Sunday, April 17. They can reach a maximum 117 possible points, though they certainly don't need them now.
