Tony Cameranesi, once a Toronto draft pick, and now playing for the Marlies under an AHL contract, is getting a chance to prove himself in the AHL after some good results with the Orlando Solar Bears, as per the AHL Transactions list.
He has 20 points in 32 games played for Orlando this year, 13 of them goals.
He had two goals in six games for the Marlies last spring.
Meanwhile, the Marlies are struggling, both with injuries and with the loss of Frederik Gauthier and Byron Froese to the Leafs. In their last game, they tried regular Solar Bear Brett Findlay at centre on the third line, and it didn’t go very well. He was playing with Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to start the game, and they got very little going at five-on-five.
Lack of even-strength offence is the constant culprit in Marlies losses this season. And their lineup can look good on paper, but the right players—the one’s who can score—are not getting near the net. Cameranesi might be the fresh blood they’ve been looking for, but at the very least he is a good fill-in while they wait for Froese to return.
The Marlies play a mid-week back-to-back on Jan 3 and 4 in Manitoba and then return to face Rochester at home on the weekend in a second back-to-back.
If there is a corresponding move down to the Solar Bears it hasn’t been announced yet.
Update: the corresponding move down is Mason Marchment heading back to the Solar Bears. He’s been sitting out a lot, so this might be good for him.
