Tonight on the Hockey Night in Canada intermission panel, it was brought up that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to deal with the Detroit Red Wings.
Riley Sheahan and Brendan Smith were brought up as possible players that the Maple Leafs were looking at on the struggling Red Wings team.
Sheahan is most famous for being arrested for being “Super Drunk” behind the wheel while dressed as a Teletubby.
This year Sheahan has 0 goals and 9 assists in 58 NHL games, with a CF% of 45.6 and OZ% of 46, a down year for the 24 year old. His past three NHL seasons have been 25, 36, and 24 points, so are the Maple Leafs looking to buy low on a new centre?
Sheahan would be an addition of an NHL depth centre, to take the place of Ben Smith or prospect Frederik Gauthier. I personally would love to see a local boy on the Maple Leafs, as long as he’s cleaned up his choices of both Halloween costumes and being a dumbass behind the wheel.
Sheahan has one year left on a deal that pays him $2,075,000.
The other name that was brought up was Brendan Smith, a 28 year old UFA defenceman.
Smith is at the end of a contract that has a $2,750,000 cap hit. He has five points in 33 games this season so far, so the acquisition of Smith only makes sense if it’s offsetting other defense moving out this week, Matt Hunwick or Roman Polak maybe?
Both of these would be minor depth moves to bring in players that Babcock knows well. Sheahan for centre going forward and Smith to plug holes for the remainder of the season, maybe next year if needed.
If the Leafs can buy cheap from the bottom of the east Red Wings, go nuts.
What do you think Leafs fans? Do either of these players float your boat?
