It’s been a wacky weekend for the draft so far, and it’s only Saturday morning. Hopefully today can give us more to talk/dream/rage about.
Now, the new rumours for you:
PK SUBBAN TO THE MAPLE LEAFS!

The rumour of PK Subban heading to the Maple Leafs came from Elliott Friedman:
Sources tell Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that the Toronto Maple Leafs have at least investigated the possibility of whether there’s a trade to be made that would make sense for them given their cap situation.
The problem with adding PK Subban is that he has a $9,000,000 cap hit. The Maple Leafs currently have about $13,000,000 in cap space. While you can technically fit Subban under the cap, there’s the Mitchell Marner situation to figure out and then the regular season cap situation after that.

Is there an offseason cap crunch for the Maple Leafs?
Apparently it was said on Sportsnet radio Vancouver today that Nashville is willing to retain salary on Subban, but still.
If by some miracle the Leafs can pull this off, it would be awesome. But they won’t. I’m so secure in this knowledge that if PK Subban joins the Maple Leafs this summer I’ll wear an Ottawa Senators jersey with ‘MELNYK’ on the back of it at every hockey event I attend until Subbans’ current contract is over.
UPDATE:
PK Subban was traded to the New Jersey Devils today for Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, and two second round picks.
It’s reported that the Maple Leafs wanted Subban, but needed the Predators to retain $3,000,000 of the deal.
MITCH MARNER IS GOING TO CHEAT ON US!
According to Darren Ferris Darren Dreger, Marner is going to talk to other teams about offer sheets next week:
Like the Matthews contract, term is a huge sticking point for Marner. Not interested in max term. Remains committed to visiting with teams next week if there’s no agreement with Toronto. https://t.co/PnNptxOVIn
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 21, 2019
To quote Willy Wonka: Stop. Don’t. Come back.
I covered the stupidity of offer sheets back in May, but this is a very good threat on Ferris’ part. It gets the message out. Of course, this tactic was also brought up recently by Steve Dangle:
Your agent’s thing is tough contract negotiations. Remember the Josh Anderson stuff? What KHL team does Andreas Athanasiou play for again? Not to mention the shenanigans he pulled the day Auston Matthews signed his extension. What the hell was that? It was like the Leafs got Matthews a cake and your agent picked his nose then stuck his fist in it.
To me, this is just posturing, but we’ll see.
NON-MARNER RFA’S ARE GETTING SIGNED!
It was reported that both Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen are close to signing deals with the Maple Leafs this weekend.
Told Leafs gm Kyle Dubas met with Jarrett Bousquet, agent for Andreas Johnsson today. More discussions to come.

It sounds like Kasperi Kapanen and the #leafs are getting closer on an extension.

No solid numbers came out last night, but it’s good news for the Leafs if these two are close to being done.

KYLE DUBAS IS TALKING TO PEOPLE!
In the middle of Gary Bettman’s speech, Kyle Dubas just left the Leafs table to pull Blues GM Doug Armstrong aside.
— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) June 22, 2019
Pick your defender from the Blues folks, just remember that Vince Dunn is more probable than Alex Pietrangelo.
Kyle Dubas and Pat Brisson, agent for Marleau and Gardiner in a conversation right now.

Trades? New contracts? Sushi place recommendations?
Kyle Dubas and Pierre Dorion engage in a discussion on the floor.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 22, 2019
This is interesting...What if Marleau retires and the Leafs send the dead cap space to Ottawa?
WHAT ABOUT ZAITSEV AND KADRI?
Nothing new came out tonight about either of those players that were talked about over the course of the week. Vancouver was the big team in on Zaitsev, and after re-signing Alex Edler I doubt they’ll be in on Nikita now.

THE LEAFS MIGHT GET A NEW (assistant) COACH!
Hearing the Maple Leafs are looking at Chicago Wolves coach Rocky Thompson to join Babcock’s staff. Thompson is under contract with Vegas as AHL coach. Will be interesting if Vegas will release him from contract.
— John Shannon (@JSportsnet) June 22, 2019
Rocky Thompson took the Erie Otters from laughing stock to Memorial Cup finalists, even after they lost Connor McDavid. He was chaos as a player, and is an excellent coach. This would be a fantastic move for the Leafs.
Check back in over the course of the weekend and I’ll keep adding all the silliness of this, the silliest of seasons.
