The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran centre Dominic Moore to a one-year contract worth $1 million. Moore, who turns 37 in March, notched 11 goals and added 14 assists in 82 games with the Boston Bruins last season. We can expect Mike Babcock to utilize him as the team’s fourth line centre, as Moore is a regular penalty killer and face-off specialist.
He regularly posts weak numbers in terms of shot differential, but this can be partially attributed to a high number of defensive zone starts. Over his three year stint with the New York Rangers between 2013-2016, only Boyd Gordon, Paul Gaustad, and Marcus Kruger started a higher percentage of shifts in their own zone.
After re-signing Curtis McElhinney and Garret Sparks to 2-year deals earlier today, the Leafs are off to an eventful, but unspectacular, start to the July 1st frenzy. Expect see Moore on a line with Matt Martin early and often, as both players have played at least 80 games in each of the past two seasons.

Moore previously played parts of two seasons for the Maple Leafs, and he set his career high in points with Toronto in 2008-2009. He was later traded to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round pick, and his tour around the NHL did not stop there. In fact, Moore’s previous teams also include the Penguins, Wild, Panthers, Canadiens, Lightning, and Sharks.
Moore took home the NHL’s Bill Masterton Trophy in 2014, which is awarded to the player who “best exemplified the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedicated to hockey”. As a Thornhill native, Moore could form an incredible car-pooling tandem with Mitchell Marner.
