This appears to be a bargain for Toronto, as he comes in shy of the 4 year, $9 million contract Zach Hyman signed earlier this offseason. As Toronto’s 6th round pick in the 2012 draft, he’s provided the organization with a ton of value already, and he will look to build on this during this new contract. The team would surely welcome another 20 goal season from Brown, and his ability to play on both special teams provides Mike Babcock with plenty of flexibility.
The three-year deal also ensures that Brown will remain an RFA after this extension expires.
The signing puts the Leafs at 48 contracts—two under the limit. The team still has a little room to play with, cap wise (they’re about $3M under the allowed 10% summer overage) but, with this signing, it looks like the Leafs’ opening roster is set.
The final cap space with the roster CapFriendly has right now (subject to some changes) is over the cap, but there’s enough LTIR room there to easily fit.
With Brown signed at $2.1M, the #Leafs are projected $4.58M above the ceiling with a roster size of 23 (17F 6D 2G)https://t.co/BPt2vFET34 pic.twitter.com/sKT9jMebk0
