When the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs by the Washington Capitals, Leafs fans relaxed from the playoff stress and got back to what we’re best at: off season speculation!

Maple Leafs Offseason Targets: Defence Edition
What can the Maple Leafs expect from drafting 17th or 18th?

When wondering what we want the Maple Leafs to do this off season, we need to understand the team depth. What we’ve built is a chart showing the Maple Leafs depth at each position, built only of players signed for the 2017/18 season and players who aren’t signed but are restricted free agents. Anyone who is UFA as of July 1st isn’t included. Players signed to AHL deals are also not included, nor are unsigned draft picks.

TL;DR - list is signed and RFA players only.

Here is the Maple Leafs depth as of May 1st, 2017.

Warning to mobile users, your chart may make lines per level of depth. Everyone else sees position by column. You can view a google doc here.

Lots, and lots, and lots of wingers available to us. Some of these wingers are also listed as centres in various places, but Mitchell Marner and William Nylander weren’t used there this season, and we were told Nylander is staying on the wing for now. As we all know, the Leafs’ biggest holes are at centre and defense, and a backup goalie may be needed as well, unless they decide to go with Garret Sparks, Kasimir Kaskisuo, or Antoine Bibeau next year.

We’ll update the depth chart at key moments throughout the off-season (trades, signings, etc..). For now, please feel free to argue about where players are vertically in the chart, and tell us how wrong we are.

Update: Ben Smith has re-signed with the Maple Leafs for one year.
