Yesterday, in a somewhat unpopular fashion I went over the Toronto Maple Leafs successes, failures, and picks from the first round of the NHL draft. Today we’re going to do the exact same thing for round two because I don’t bend to the will of criticism nor do I learn from it no matter how good it is. I’ll say this now and I won’t repeat it again: This is about the Toronto Maple Leafs. All numbers relate to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Any games played by the players mentioned that were not for the Toronto Maple Leafs do not matter in the slightest because those teams most likely wouldn’t exist without that sweet sweet TML welfare.
If a really great player played 90 games for the Leafs and 900 for other teams, well doesn’t that point out how dumb the Leafs have been in the past, eh?
Here are the things I learned about the Maple Leafs second round draft picks:
The Maple Leafs really, really, REALLY, like drafting defenders in the second round, even though only two of them ended up playing more than 100 games for the Maple Leafs; Todd Gill (1984) would play 639 games for the Maple Leafs and Bob McGill (1980) would play 318.
Like in the first round, the Maple Leafs have drafted only two goalies. Like in the first round, one of the goalies would go on to become one of the top goalies of their generation. UNLIKE the first round, this goalie would reach his peak with the Maple Leafs. I’m talking about Felix Potvin (1990) of course. Potvin would backstop the Maple Leafs to back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances, and then go on to success with the Montreal Canadiens in the amazing Roy/Potvin swap that never happened because 1996 Montreal was dumb and cheap.
Ahem.
Moving on, once again the OHL dominates with the WHL in a far, far off second place.
So, how did the picks do? 21 of them never played an NHL game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, though a couple still have a shot. Jeremy Bracco (2015), Carl Grundstrum (2016) are on the Marlies, Yegor Korshkov (2016) is still in Russia and Eemeli Rasanen (2017) is back playing pro hockey in Finland next season but could make his way back after next year. One of those players, Doug Jarvis (1975) would go on and do stuff with some other team but whatever.
On average, a second round pick for the Leafs will play 128 games, score 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points. If we only include the players who played for the Maple Leafs, those numbers rise to 231 games, 42 goals, 60 assists, and 102 points.
Here are all of the players the Maple Leafs have picked in round two.
