The Maple Leafs are making deals and that affects their contract space, cap space (LTIR room, more accurately) and draft picks. All numbers are accurate as of time of posting and will change whenever a trade is made. Keep up with the action on Cap Friendly. Since no further moves were made, this post is now accurate as of the rest of the season.
Contracts
The Leafs have 48 SPCs, the same number they got down to by trading Eric Fehr and Nikita Soshnikov. The limit is 50, but that number does not include previously drafted players signed to ELCs that take effect on July 1, 2018. They only count in next year’s limit. The Leafs can run out the season and playoffs at 50 if they want.

Cap Space
This is more properly called LTIR room in the Leafs’ case, and it sits at $3,423,334 per Cap Friendly.
However, one thing to understand about how this is calculated, if the Leafs were to acquire a player via trade, as they did with Tomas Plekanec, the entire cap hit an any earnable performance bonuses of that player are deducted from the LTIR room. There is no helpful proration of the cap hit like there is when you are adding a player while under the cap.
Note: I am basing this 100% off of the way Cap Friendly calculated the change in the Maple Leafs LTIR salary pool available when Plekanec was added. As always, I defer to them on this topic.
So if a team out there under the cap is looking to add a very expensive player, they only have to fit in the proportion of their cap hit that covers the rest of the year. For the Leafs, and any other LTIR team, you have to use the full amount plus performance bonuses.
Active Roster Size
The Leafs roster is limited to 23 players not in the minors or on LTIR or IR. They are currently at that limit, with Auston Matthews on IR.
That limit vanishes at midnight February 25, so be prepared to see teams making deals overnight, as the need to make roster space for their new players goes away.
As of now the Leafs have (not counting the two players on LTIR) 15 forwards, seven defenders and two goalies or 24 players in total.
