In the second period against the Kings Thursday night, the Leafs were in a deep hole, when Auston Matthews got a breakaway. Anze Kopitar tried (or maybe succeeded) in stick checking him, got the stick up too high, and Matthews was awarded a penalty shot.
That was his tenth goal of the year, and the 50th of his young NHL career. Jonathan Quick was mad for the eleven-millionth time in his career.
Late in the game, Jake Muzzin knocked the net off while Quick was under heavy pressure, so a second penalty shot was awarded. Matthews took this one too.
Not the result he wanted. After the game, he said that in the first one, he saw Quick move back, so he tried to use that on the second one.
Quick was mad again. Shocking, I know.
Matthews is all business in his post game interview, and doesn’t care about his personal achievements. But seriously, I think he might be a good player.
