The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a new logo celebrating Black Excellence that will be displayed during the Celebrating Black Excellence game against the Carolina Hurricanes this weekend. The logo was designed in partnership with Toji Nola, a designer and illustrator based in Toronto. Toji is passionate about creating designs that leave a lasting impression and celebrate meaningful stories.

The logo is meant to recognize exceptional achievements of individuals within the community, namely the visibility and inspiration those achievements bring. Additionally, the Toronto Maple Leafs are an institution with a legacy that spans generations. The roots of the Leaf symbolizes bringing families and communities together (to watch the team lose again in the first round, sorry).

I thought this description of the logo was very poetic, so here it is:

The logo’s roots, located at the stem of the leaf, symbolize ancestry and heritage, providing one with a strong sense of identity that helps them grow to lofty heights. There are thirteen root branches mirroring the thirteen veins at the top of the iconic Maple Leaf. In the background of the Leafs logo are a set of triangles and each point of the triangle represents an important aspect of Black Excellence; community, leadership and character. The large triangle, resting on top of a zigzag pattern, represents the pinnacle of achievements – excellence. The zigzag pattern indicates the ebbs and flows of life and that the road to excellence isn’t often linear. When these elements come together, a beautiful tapestry is formed giving people a sense of identity, history and belonging.

The Toronto Sceptres beat the New York Sirens 4-1. Toronto is rocketing up the standings thanks to this five-game winning streak. Hannah Miller had four points (2g, 2a) in this win. Julia Gosling scored the other two, and Daryl Watts had three assists. Huge night for that line. Actually they weren't a line outright, Watts and Miller play together, but Gosling was the 13th forward in this game. I'd say there's no better time to ask for a promotion!

Talkin' about practice, Calle Jarnkrok is back!

Craig Berube on Calle Jarnkrok nearing a return to the Leafs’ lineup: “A very intelligent player very capable of playing all three positions up front... He’s a Swiss army knife”
After Wednesday’s practice, head coach Craig Berube discussed the second day of on-ice sessions following the break, Max Pacioretty leaving practice injured, managing the load for the players involved in the 4 Nations tournament, and Calle Jarnkrok’s potential return to the lineup. Pacioretty is probably injured again.

Maple Leafs’ Pacioretty tweaks something at practice
Max Pacioretty’s return to practice got off to a less-than-ideal start.

Some thoughts on the 4 Nations and the Leafs depth scoring issues. I agree, the Leafs should get McDavid and Crosby on the first lines and move Marner to anchor a line with Point on the third line.

Lessons from the 4 Nations tournament for the Maple Leafs, and examining the depth scoring issue -- Leafs Notebook
Wow, what a 4 Nations tournament so far. I thought it would be fun, but I didn’t expect this. The teams are playing for keeps and defending hard. It has been physical and feisty, with genuine animosity on display. The big Canada-USA game was a physical, tight-checking, defensive battle. As the Four Nations break officially […]

Again, Marner with two hard forecheckers who can create open spaces Marner can find – pretty good playbook. Makes me think playing him with David Kampf or Pontus Holmberg or god forbid Max Domi on a third line is a terrible idea.

Jon Cooper on Mitch Marner’s line vs. Team Finland: “Cirelli and Hagel are the worker bees, and Mitch organizes things in the offensive zone... The line was great”
On Team Canada’s off-day, head coach Jon Cooper discussed the Hagel-Cirelli-Marner line’s performance against Team Finland, his players’ buy-in to the cause, and the meaning of Thursday’s final against Team USA. You put Mitch Marner with Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli against Finland. In a tournament setting like this, as you think ahead to the […]

Jonas Siegal wants the Leafs to target ROR, Luke Schenn, Colton Parayko, and/or David Savard. Ooooookay, broken clocks and whatnot.
