Reimer Overcomes Illness, Guides Leafs to Victory

Battling through an early bout of indigestion, Reimer came up huge for the Leafs on Tuesday night, making 28 saves en route to a 2-1 victory over the previously red-hot New York Islanders. Phil Kessel may have potted the game-winner—a blistering shot past Al Montoya—but it was the theatrics of Reimer late in the third that earned the Leafs their seventh victory in eleven games since the All-Star break (7-2-2) and pulled them to within six points of the final playoff spot in the East.

But it nearly didn’t go that far the 22-year-old. Admittedly feeling "great" all day, Reimer began sensing trouble late in the first period of the eventual one-goal win. "My stomach was just flip-flopping," he explained, "and I thought 'Jeez I might not be able to finish this one today'."

As the stomach swirling intensified, Reimer decided it best to notify Leafs head athletic therapist Andy Playter of his woes, also informing backup Ben Scrivens to be ready in case, well, the inevitable finally arose. There were near moments of disaster.

"I think [Michael] Grabner was coming down when they had a powerplay and I was like kind of dry heaving," recalled Reimer with a smile. "I was like ‘Oh, please don’t shoot’ (laughs). It was tough, but went and saw [the doctor] in between the periods, had some magic medicine and felt better towards the end of the second."

Reimer ain't got time to puke. More links after the jump.
