First Period

A slow period started this game.

Leafs on an unhurried line change:

And another late penalty to the Leafs:

After one, it was 1-0 Chicago. Leafs started slow, but it's hard to say they weren't in the game with 75% Expected Goals at five-on-five. Nylander's chance was the only really good look, though. Chicago's only moments of actually good offence were on the power play.

Second Period

The pace picked up considerably in the second period.

The Leafs got a power play when Seth Jones went off for holding. The first unit was stanky – couldn't get set up, did nothing. Then the second unit came out.

The hot line for this game scored again:

And a few seconds later, they all fell down.

After two it was 3-2 Leafs, a very disappointing result given the work the Leafs put in and the faint signs of actual life from Chicago.

Third Period

Chicago took an early penalty and the first unit struggled some more to get set, the second unit looked better.

Not a lot went on for the bulk of the period, but Toronto kept the lead in shooting. Chris Tanev decided to show off his offensive ability:

The former defensive stalwart of the Leafs played a role:

Chicago pulled the goalie nice and early. After a lot of struggle by Toronto to clear their own zone, eventually Pontus Holmberg got an ENG. Chicago challenged for offside, and the situation is so complicated, I'll save it for someone's morning after "Why this wasn't offside" article.

Toronto got a power play out of the failed challenge.

Third line was really good tonight. Competition quality or just happenstance?

Final score was 5-2 Leafs. Next game is Tuesday in Boston.
