First Period

Did you know the Maple Leafs were last in the NHL last season for goals by defenders? I've heard that somewhere.

Linus Ullmark spent longer than a Ron MacLean intro fixing three things on his equipment to calm down the frenetic start. How did that work out?

1-0 Leafs

First penalty:

This high stick is not called, but OEL gets a free shot at the guy, so it all worked out.

Flyer on Flyer violence was not on the bingo card, though.

Pontus Holmberg drawing a penalty very much was, however.

2-0 Leafs

Awwww, someone isn't having any fun:

This is five-on-five, the Senators did get some good shots on the power play. The Leafs scored on theirs, of course. Leafs at 57% Corsi and 75% Expected Goals in that period. One of these two teams was better than last game, I'll let you decide who that is.

Second Period

The life drained out of this game midway through the second, as the flaccid possession game of the Senators met the Leafs desire to not push too hard on offence.

Nick Robertson with a careless high stick to give the Senators some life.

2-1 Leafs

Leafs didn't add much, but the Senators didn't add much of value again. They had a massive 80% Corsi and nearly equal Expected Goals, but it's all on volume of shots.

Third Period

The Leafs needed to slough off the turtle shell this period. And they started out with the puck a lot more than they'd had it in the last period.

Mitch Marner got a bloody nose from a high stick that was ruled to be a follow through. Many people assumed that because the player did not make contact with the puck, it can't be a follow through, but this is not in the rule.

Deep into the third period, the Senators had zero Shots on Goal on a Corsi of 12-12. Leafs were defending via blocking in the periods they got hemmed in.

Tie game with five minutes to go:

First Shot on Goal of the period for Ottawa.

The Leafs took a timeout to consider an offside challenge, but they ultimately declined.

The puck was ruled to have touched the glass so no penalty.

Anthony Stolarz kept the Leafs in this game late in the third.

Timely block on Calle Järnkrok.

No one could score. Overtime it is.

Expected Goals in All-Situations were 2.5 to 1.7 for Ottawa, with the Senators getting their best chances on the power play.

Overtime

Max Domi, everyone. How do you like him now?

Leafs win.
