First Period

John Tavares with a couple of these:

Anthony Stolarz made everyone queasy:

Pontus Holmberg is not Tavares:

Ottawa with a penalty:

The power play was really good. And then Matt Knies took a shot after the whistle, and it looked like he was just too in the zone to stop. Shane Pinto tried to give him what for.

Pinto met the floor.

Knies got called for slashing somewhere in there.

At the end of the period Morgan Rielly did a very stupid thing:

After one is was zero-all. The Corsi was 12-12 at five-on-five.

All situations heavily favoured the Leafs.

Second Period

The period began with a few seconds of Rielly's penalty.

Chris Tanev was impressing with a lot of good work:

Thomas Chabot opened the scoring.

1-0 Ottawa

Great screen job by everyone there.

Chabot went off for a high stick. This was a bit... weak.

I did not enjoy the second unit on this power play, but neither unit scored, so it doesn't really matter who looked good.

This was a good chance by McMann, that said:

Pontus Holmberg tried to draw a circle around the obvious interference at the blueline by falling backwards, but the ref did not buy it.

The Leafs have had a lot of success with the pass to spring a rush, but they seem to be trying too hard to force it this game. Their zone time is not generating a lot of great chances, and in this period, any shots to speak of at this point.

Marner with a great chance as the Leafs finally got something going. Ullmark followed up by dumping Marner on his butt for skating through the crease.

Steven Lorentz and Calle Järnkrok with a two-on-one that just didn't have the finish.

The end of the period was a lot better for the Leafs than the first half, but the score was 1-0 Ottawa after two.

Both teams had some flurries of pressure. And that goal location is a bit hard to take, even given the screen.

Third Period

Max Domi on the Tavares line at the start of the third period. He wasn't handling the puck very well in the early going on the second line.

Ridly Greig took another penalty to break up a good Ottawa transition. Not bright.

The Leafs first unit looked spectacular, and then Dylan Cozens got a shorty.

Boo. 2-0 Senators.

Also GRRRRR.

Everything in this games seems like a struggle. I mentioned Domi with the puck, but he's not the only one struggling for control and to make a clean pass. Domi was back on the third line after the second goal.

Matthews with a post while Ullmark was down and out.

Tim Stützle put this game to bed with an ENG with three minutes to go.

3-0 Ottawa.

Brady Tkachuk scored to make it 4-0 as a final score.

There was a spontaneous dance party at the end.

The Leafs took a timeout and then put out the superline of old: Tavares, Marner and Matthews.

Next game is Thursday in Ottawa, time to be determined.
