First Period

For a really obvious trip, that's what.

To sum up the Leafs came out hot, got a lot of good quality chances, scored twice and then made a series of bad choices against a team that is actually pretty good at controling the play and scoring goals. Oh, and you know, Sid, power play, that's part of this mess too.

Joe Woll was not good on goals two and three, and that's how...

After one it was 3-2 Penguins.

All Situations, to show how Pittsburgh owned that period. Also, wow, the Penguins are bad defensively.

Auston Matthews with three tries to clear the puck on the PK at the end of the period, a problem that seems common on the PK lately from multiple people.

Second Period

Woll's going to take heat for that, but that was a big old defensive breakdown and a guy using his favourite move.

John Tavares tied it up again late, and that was satisfying. A good way to end the period.

It ain't over till it's over.

The best goal of the game.

After two it was 5-4 Leafs. So the Leafs played better in that period?

No!

Okay, to be fair they had a flurry just before, during and after their power play, but overall, nope, they were just taking advantage of the Pittsburgh weaknesses.

Third Period

Ten seconds in, and there was proof this game had not tightened up:

A not great defensive play by Matthews and Woll... well, he got away with some things in this game that should have led anyone to expect this, forget the bad goals against.

For the rest of the period, the Leafs had the most shots, they were good chances, but no joy on getting past the previously porous Blomqvist.

After three it was 5-all in a very dull period.

Overtime

Nylander with the winner. Pittsburgh looked very, very ineffective in overtime.

Final score was 6-5 Leafs.

That was one weird game. Next game is tomorrow evening at home vs the Sharks (7:30 start).
