Alright, let's do this recap. No Omar tonight so a lot fewer highlights.
First Period
1-0
Matthews scores from Marner. Nice!
1-1
Stankoven poked around and got a puck Woll thought he had covered into the goal. That's Young Stankoven's first goal in 26 games.
After One
The Leafs were outshot 11-18 at 5v5, scoring chances were an astonishing 1-11, meaning only 18% of the scoring chances went on the Stars net. A lot of this came from the defenders shooting a lot and the forwards not getting much of the pieces.
Rielly and Myers had three of the Leafs seven shots on goal in the period, and all of the Leafs shots on goal were at least 32 ft away from the net.
Second Period
Ping! Timmins hit a third post for the Leafs in this game (previous two were Tavares and Rielly)
1-2
Tavares was in the box for slashing Duchene, and a deflecting shot from Harley bounced off Stankoven and eventually off Mavrik Bourque. The second power play unit for the Stars gives them the lead.
Berube sent out a shift of Nylander-Matthews-Marner to get something going.
Knies took Lyubushkin out wide on a 1-on-1 and nearly scored top shelf short side.
OEL took down Blackwell after the forward got around him, causing some discussions. The refs gave OEL a holding penalty. Honestly, fair.
After Two
Congrats to Reaves on his six shifts in this game. Will he hit 10?
Notice where the blobs are.
The Leafs are supposed to be less good offensively to make them much better defensively under Berube. Their recent run has made them empty offensively and open in front of the net defensively.
This is probably also just a blip in the data but that's three deflection goals in the last two games. Is that cause for adjustments? I wouldn't be surprised if the coach brings up tying up sticks and bodies in front.
Third Period
1-3
Fun! Dallas scored on that power play on the fresh ice, got control of the front of the net, and Duchene pulled a JVR to score.
1-4
Stankoven scored a second deflection goal for his sixth of the season. That's two goals on two shots to essentially end the game early in the third.
Bourque hit the post to almost make it 1-5.
The Leafs get a power play with about 10 minutes left. Marner gives the puck away immediately trying to make a pass to the middle. Matthews later gets a shot that's stopped by the glove of Oettinger. Jamie Benn gave him a bump after the play. Johnson noted Tavares has been open on the bumper position a lot.
Marner takes a slapshot that hit Knies and stung him.
The Leafs really loved shooting from the corner right before they got hit. It might be difficult to ignore where the Leafs have been giving up goals from, as well.
The team leaders in shots in this game were as follows: Domi, OEL, Tanev, Myers. Defenders had half the team's shots. If you're looking for shots on goal, kick Domi off that list and it's still 50% shots from the defense.
Oh, and for those asking, Reaves got one more shift in the game, bringing his cardio up to 7 shifts for 5 minutes.
