Following on the success of two other dormant series PPP and I have decided that in order to fill the gap in NHL news that we'll take a look at each of the current Leafs, possible Leafs on the Marlies, and prospects. We'll recap their performance last year, what we can expect from them, and how they can win our hearts (hint: signing the contract was a good first step...unless your name is Bryan McCabe). We have no idea how long of a series this will end up being or how consistent it will be but with two of us expect it to only be half as half-assed and twice as timely.
Mayers goes the distance against Tootoo, which makes him the best fighter Toronto has had since Tie Domi.

Former Leaf he'd have to play like in order to be christened a deity
Tie Domi. We need someone with heart who isn't afraid to drop the gloves. Jamal Mayers isn't short, but hopefully he plays with a chip on his shoulder like Tie and Darcy did.
Biggest Question Marks
Can the Leafs really skate three third lines? Jamal Mayers might be a leader, and he might know how to fight, but 71G in 595GP doesn't help the cause, unless we're really Tanking for Tavares.
2007-2008 Summary
80GP, 12G, 15A means that Jamal scored only three fewer goals than Jason Blake, for a quarter the price! Unfortunately Jason Blake stinks. Mayers played for the Blues, which means none of us have ever seen him play since games in the Western Confererence don't end until tomorrow.
Jamal Mayers upside is his penalty killing. It's no secret that the Leafs had an atrocious PK last season, and Mayers is being brought in to address that.
He was selected in 2007 and 2008 to play for Canada's World Championship team, where he won a gold and a silver, so people other than Toronto think he has some good upside at least.
Projected 2008-2009 role/team
Mayers will stick with the team because he was a major part of St. Louis' PK last season. The Leafs are looking to beef up defensive responsibility, and bringing in Mayers and Ron Wilson should get them on the right track to PK success.
