The QMJHL trade window has opened and the Halifax Mooseheads have made their choice: they're sellers. The Mooseheads are tied for the last two playoff spots with Acadie-Bathurst and Charlottetown at 29 points each. The Mooseheads have decided to start rebuilding their team now, and kicked things off with a trade on Saturday sending their 19 year old defenceman Cavan Fitzgerald to Shawinigan.
Yesterday the blueline got younger, Metronews Halifax reported Maple Leafs prospect Cody Donaghey was dealt to the Moncton Wildcats for forward Michael O’Leary, a second-round draft pick in 2016 and a fourth-round pick in 2017.
This is good news for Donaghey as the Wildcats sit 2nd in the QMJHL playoff standings and third overall points-wise, so he can be expecting a long playoff run this spring.
Donaghey is now joining his third team in two years; last summer he was traded from th Quebec Remparts to Halifax, and his fourth team overall, as he was drafted by Royun-Noranda originally.
Donaghey brings some veteran leadership to the Wildcats who are stocked with older players for this playoff run. Donaghey wore the 'A' for Quebec and Halifax.
This season he's played in 21 games after starting the season recovering from an injury filled year in Quebec, and has played well for the struggling Mooseheads. He's scored 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points in 21 games this season. He signed a contract with the Maple Leafs in September 2014.
