Them

One assumes a computer makes a lot of the NHL schedule. And then people get their sticky fingers on it and tinker. Beyond the general design this season for home-and-homes, sometimes separated by many days and a couple of games, there seems to have been a try at giving the Leafs a banger of a finish. Anyone could have thought a run of Devils games post deadline would be great entertainment.

The Devils are young and fast, a lot like the Leafs were in 2018, and the once young Leafs are now grizzled veterans of 25 and 26 who have been sobered up by playoff losses. The matchup is ideal. Not the first time some goalies got together and destroyed a narrative.

We learned about the Devils the last game, and little has changed. They are dangerous offensively, get by on defence, and Jake Allen is on a hot streak, but their early goaltending destroyed their playoff chances. Allen has looked a little less like a starter lately, although he appears to have been the sole reason they even got to a shootout in their last game.

They recalled Akira Schmid today to backup likely starter Allen, and Jack Hughes is out with an injury.

Us

With this game a back-to-back with travel, expect only late breaking news on roster changes. The options, assuming no one is newly healthy who wasn't yesterday, are Nick Robertson and Noah Gregor on offence and Conor Timmins on defence.

The Game

Motivation for the Leafs to win:

The Devils aren't formally eliminated, but they are out of contention. You never know how hard a team like that will pretend, though.

Consider this your preview and GDT. We'll update with the Leafs roster at game time.
