So my first thought is “phew”. My second is that Nylander and his team got a very nice deal. $25M in bonus money means he likely has strong lockout protection, and the actual AAV in years 2-6 is higher than I anticipated. It appears that those arguing his leverage disappeared with the Leafs hot start were incorrect, which is something I’ve sort of felt from the start. Nylander’s value to the Leafs is that he’s a first line winger who hasn’t yet hit his prime. Any team, especially a contender, will get a lot from adding him to their roster, particularly as we know his skillset synergizes brilliantly with Matthews’.
