Losing Matt Frattin? Well, it's not a shock. Losing Ben Scrivens? Meh, he probably wasn't any kind of long-term answer, but at least for the time being, he was a serviceable backup on the cheap, made more important by the cap going down. Losing a second round pick? Well, it doesn't sound like a great idea, but not the end of the world. Oh, and Bernier isn't even signed.
The good news is that the Leafs have acquired a goalie who is a definite upgrade, at least as a backup, and who could push James Reimer for the starting role. I chatted briefly with Justin Goldman from the Goalie Guild (@TheGoalieGuild) for his thoughts, and I found them encouraging:
