After winning the Ted Lindsay Trophy as the OHL's "Most Outstanding Player" the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the OHL Playoff MVP, and was named CHL Player of the Year last night, Mitch Marner has another trophy for his collection, the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy, after being named the MVP of the 2016 Memorial Cup tournament.
Marner scored 2 goals and had 12 assists to lead the Memorial Cup in scoring.
The Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy is named after for Maple Leafs owner/president Stafford Smythe, son of legendary Maple Leafs owner Conn Smythe. It was donated to the CHL after Stafford's death in 1972.
Marner joins Corey Perry (2005) as London Knights players to win the award, as well as players such as Taylor Hall (2009 & 2010), Brad Richards (2000), Darcy Tucker (1994), Dale Hawerchuk (1981), and Mark Howe (1973).
Collecting more hardware on this season than a Home Depot, can we expect an NHL playoff MVP award in Marner's future? He's got the son, he now needs the father.
