Just as the Leafs were going up to the podium to use their pick in the first round of the NHL Draft, they decided to make a trade.

Anaheim, with the 31st overall traded up to 23. Bob McKenzie noted in his post on this year's draft that the group of players from 20 on down were fairly even.

The Leafs get puck number 58 in addition.

The puckpedia pick valuator shows this as a good deal for Anaheim, with a value to their picks of 14.68 while Toronto's pick is valued at 16.01.

Another way to look at is that if Toronto is confident their player will be there at 31, they got a second rounder for free.
