Today the Toronto Maple Leafs have exchanged their troubled former backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson to the Colorado Avalanche for Calle Rosen.
What’s going on here?
This:
Morgan Rielly returns to the ice today in Toronto for the first time since he broke his foot. As @FriedgeHNIC reported Saturday, he's expected back before the end of the regular season.

Calle Rosen has not been very good in the NHL, but he is a top-pairing stud in the AHL, and he used to be team dad to Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren. He’s good enough that he can join the Leafs until Rielly and Ceci are back for real — likely some time in March for both of them — even if he only sits in the press box.
Or... he can go to the Marlies. Because he was so old when he was signed to an NHL deal, Rosen, now 26, is still waivers exempt, and the Avs had sent him to the AHL a few days ago. He will start out in Toronto in the AHL, and will be AHL playoff-eligible. As will Michael Hutchinson in Colorado.
This is a win-win AHL deal that brings back a familiar face to Toronto.
