Today the Toronto Marlies have signed NCAA defenceman Brennan Kapcheck to a two-year AHL deal. He will begin with the Marlies after quarantine on a PTO for this season.
Kapcheck, 24, has been at two Leafs development camps and has just finished his college career with AIC. He was the captain in his final season, a recurring theme with Marlies signings.
Kapcheck is from Mt. Prospect, Illinois and is listed at 5’9” and 161 lbs. That’s likely a bit out of date on the weight. He is a right shooting defender who has always been good for 25 points in a regular NCAA season.
The Marlies currently have a very full roster of defenders, but there is always time to take a look at a new prospect in game action. Kapcheck would be the second oldest defender on the roster if Calle Rosen was recalled to the Leafs.
He should be subject to just seven days quarantine, once he arrives in Canada, assuming he can travel by some way other than a commercial airline. The Marlies season runs to May 15, and, so far, there is no word on any post-season plans. The Marlies have moved up to second place in the Canadian Division behind Laval.
