With the signing of Darryl Boyce yesterday, the Leafs find themselves with an awful lot of bottom 3 talent going into training camp. There's the aforementioned Boyce, Colton Orr, Mike Brown, Mike Zigomanis, Philippe Dupuis, and Jay Rosehill. None of these players have a ceiling higher than the 4th line in the NHL and none of these players scream out essential AHL veteran (except for Zigomanis). What are we doing with all these guys?
Now granted injuries will happen throughout the lineup and there will be a necessity to move players up the depth chart in order to fill holes, but the Leafs have more than enough true prospects waiting in the wings and deserving of their shot at the NHL. If Joffrey Lupul goes down, who are we replacing him with; Jay Rosehill or Matt Frattin? Exactly.
The biggest question mark of those 6 players is Philippe Dupuis. If the plan was to sign Zigomanis to replace Brent, then why also sign Dupuis? With his 1-way contract, it just seems like a waste of money and an SPC. Hopefully Burke has a bigger plan for these guys that I'm just not seeing, because right now it seems like he's randomly signing guys without one. Time will tell.
