Today, the Maple Leafs finished up their first practices and scrimmages at training camp and have made their first round of cuts.
The juniors have all been sent to their teams:
The following seven players have been reassigned to their CHL teams: Mikhail Abramov (Victoriaville), Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (Peterborough), Filip Kral (Spokane), Kalle Loponen (Sudbury), Marc-Antoine Pepin (Shawinigan), Nicholas Robertson (Peterborough) and Riley Stotts (Calgary).
This tells us that Filip Kral is going back to the WHL for another season, which was not a given heading into this camp.
The split between the NHL and the AHL squad has now begun. Of note, only players on AHL contracts and waiver exempt players on NHL contracts can be formally sent to the Marlies before Friday when waivers start up again.
The following 15 players have been reassigned to the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and will skate with the Maple Leafs Player Development Staff ahead of the Marlies’ 2019 training camp, which will open on September 24: Matthew Bradley, Justin Brazeau, Giorgio Estephan, Brady Ferguson, Alex Gudbranson, Ryan Johnston, Michael Kapla, Aaron Luchuk, Tanner MacMaster, Zach O’Brien, Scott Pooley, Marcus Power, Sergei Sapego, Ian Scott and Maksim Zhukov.
Most of the players cut in this group are actually going to end up as Growlers in the ECHL this season, so it’s notable that other than Ian Scott, the only player on an NHL deal is Aaron Luchuk, who was signed to that ELC by Ottawa.
Next week, once a few preseason games have been player, the actual Marlies will start to be cut from the roster, so it looks like Ian Scott is most likely to start the season in St. John’s.
The surprises might be who stayed, a few on AHL deals are still aroung: Kristians Rubins on defence is an AHL-contracted player who was on the Growlers last year. Darren Archibald is the sort of tough guy who usually shows up in preseason games. Nicholas Baptist has preseason NHL experience. Rich Clune is here, as is Colt Conrad who impressed in Traverse City. Hudson Elynuik, another big-bodied player who was a hit on the Growlers is here, so I think we’re seeing some of the players who will make the roster for Tuesday’s game in St. John’s.
