A classic Friday news dump, the Maple Leafs announced that they have extended Philippe Myers by two years for $850k per season.

Myers was originally signed by Toronto in the summer as a free agent, one of many depth signings that looked poised to compete for a bench spot or be an AHL regular. Funnily enough, it wasn't his first time with Toronto – back in 2022 he was loaned to the Marlies for 16 games while he was on his way out of Nashville.

Myers has spent all but three games with the Marlies up with the Leafs on the NHL roster. He hasn't dressed every game – only 11 in total so far this year – but has averaged over 17 minutes per game, usually as Rielly's defensive partner ever since Berube switched up the pairings to use McCabe and Tanev together.

Honestly? I've liked Myers for what he is and what he costs. He plays pretty reliable defense, and though he doesn't help the offense at all, that's not what he's there for. It's also not what should be expected of him. He's got that combination of size and skating that is very common in useful depth defensemen.

So, nice to see you sticking around, Philippe!
