Corsi and Fenwick | EV Face Offs | H2H Time On Ice

Game Summary | Event Summary | PensBurgh Recap

The Toronto Maple Leafs will not let this playoff dream die. Despite playing a poor game and looking like they would gift the Pittsburgh Penguins two points they managed to do just enough to win. When people are being charitable they'll say that winning ugly is a sign of good teams, When it's the Leafs, it's because they were lucky. Either way, it's two points for the Leafs that leave them five back of the Rangers, four back of Carolina, 2 back of Buffalo, and moving up away from the lottery zone. All in all, a pretty good night.

  1. James Reimer was a big part of that with 27 saves on 29 shots. His save percentage is .929 and he's on his way to qualifying for the league leaderboard.
  2. Phil Kessel, as important as ever to the Leafs' cause, potted the tying goal in the third and then made a beautiful touch pass to Mikhail Grabovski.
  3. I don't know what people mean exactly when they say someone ha sa 'heavy' shot but Nikolai Kulemin's is definitely 'heavy'. He rifled a wrist shot to tie the game at 1 and drew comparisons to Wendel Clark from Dave Shoalts.
  4. Luke Schenn lead all defenceman in time on ice and was his regular beastly self.
  5. Carl Gunnarsson played over 23 minutes, picked up two assists, and was +2 on the night. His play of late, along with Keith Aulie's, is one of the reasons that Burke felt comfortable moving Francois Beauchemin.
  6. Dion Phaneuf wasn't very good on the second Penguins goal but he made up for it on the game winner. It was a nice bit of hard work that led to the game winning goal.
  7. Hockey players can still whip up great nicknames! That prompted Alec Brownscombe's great tweet: "I am the Shermanator, a Goalie Robot sent through time to change the future for one lucky hockey team."
