Late breaking news as Bob McKenzie tweeted that Luke Schenn has signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and will be at camp later this morning:
Nothing official in way of Schenn numbers but hearing it's a 5 year deal in the $3.5M range, give or take $100K. Exact details in the a.m.
We'll update full details as they come in. A cap hit between $3.4M and $3.6M [Update: It's $3.6M] puts Schenn among the following company: Rob Scuderi, Johnny Oduya, Kris Letang, Ryan Suter, Roman Hamrlik, Nick Schultz, Willie Mitchell, Cory Sarich, Brent Burns, Matt Carle, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Viktor Hedman. As Chemmy noted, this deal actually covers one of Schenn's UFA years as he would have been eligible to be an unrestricted free agent after the fourth year of his deal (seven accrued years of service).
While we wait for confirmation on those figures, here are a couple of recent posts about the Leafs' younger cornerstone defender:
- Chemmy's post looked at some comparables and came up with a sub-$3M per year figure
- Steve Burtch compared Luke Schenn's defensive play to the play of captain Dion Phaneuf
