Our top six isn't producing very well outside of Phil Kessel and Clarke MacArthur. It's not because they're snakebit it's because they're not shooting. Most player's shooting percentages are pretty stable over their career so the way to score goals is to shoot on net. Here's our top six viewed two ways: by total shots on goal and by rank at their position in terms of shots on goal. In terms of ranking 1-30 would suggest a first liner, 1-10 being a top third of the league first liner and 20-30 being a pretty crummy first liner but a great second liner, etc.
Shots on goal:
Versteeg 17 | Bozak 7 | Kessel 34 |
Kulemin 13 | Grabovski 16 | MacArthur 23 |
Ranking:
Versteeg T-42 | Bozak T-135 | Kessel T-8 |
Kulemin T-64 | Grabovski T-62 | MacArthur T-29 |
Not pretty, especially for Tyler Bozak. The surprising news is that Clarke MacArthur is shooting at a first line rate at his position. It's a bad first line rate, he'd be the second worst first line right winger, but having our second RW shooting that much is nice. If he keeps shooting he could be a pleasant surprise.
There's not a ton here, just want to illustrate the Leafs offensive woes: it all starts with directing shots on net. Hopefully if other players start shooting more that will pull defensemen away from Kessel.
