Paul Ranger decided that he had enough of the NHL and after his age 25 season he disappeared entirely. Before this he was regarded as a fairly competent NHL d-man:
His usage chart is a little weird; the only time he's in the tough quadrant he had a -7 Corsi Rel, but he's succeeded in other roles:
We don't know contract details yet but I assume it won't be a huge number, but the real bizarre thing here is the Leafs' current defensive roster: Dion Phaneuf, Carl Gunnarsson, John-Michael Liles, and Jake Gardiner are all signed, Mark Fraser in arbitration and with Cody Franson an unsigned RFA makes seven.
It's hard to understand how the Leafs plan to make the cap work here. Somebody's probably on the move to open up cap space now, I just hope it's Liles and not Franson or Gardiner. Hold on tight.
Update:
Paul Ranger's deal with the Leafs is for 1 year...around $1 mil.
