The Leafs have signed 23-year-old Marlies forward Sam Carrick to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.
According to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston, the contract is a two-way, $600,000 deal with a guaranteed salary of $150,000.
Carrick registered two points in 16 games with the Leafs this season and 27 points in 59 games with their AHL-affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
In his AHL career, Carrick has collected 66 points in 140 games since he was drafted 144th overall in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
During the Marlies playoff stretch this season, Carrick registered three points and 14 shots in the team's 5-game loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In 2015-2016, Carrick will enter his fourth season of professional hockey. In his junior career with the OHL's Brampton Battalion, Carrick registered 169 points in 254 games over parts of four seasons.
Known for his physical, up-tempo style, Carrick has served as an alternate captain with the Marlies for the last two seasons after serving as Brampton's captain.
The contract represents a tryout of sorts for Carrick, who projects as a potential fourth line, energy player with some jump.
Carrick was most effective when used on the Marlies penalty kill.
The move is more indicative of the direction the Leafs are going, as they continue to rebuild around a Marlies-centric development system.
