As can be expected after a week long layoff, the Leafs came out fairly flat against the Flames. John-Michael Liles failed to properly defend Curtis Glencross on Calgary's first shot of the game, and moments later Matt Frattin over-pursued in the defensive zone, leave a wide open Scott Hannan for goal #2. Something woke Toronto up in the intermission, as Joffrey Lupul potted a goal early in the second period, and the Leafs took over from there. Phil Kessel continued his hot start to the season with the game tying and game winning goals. As Vintage Leaf Memories writes:
It’s hard for fans not to "fall in love" with Phil Kessel when he performs like he did Saturday night. Before he even scored the tying and eventual winning goals, he was flying, setting up plays, just looking like the Kessel that Leaf fans want to see. We’ve seen bad Phil (lackluster, uninvolved, unproductive) but this was very much good Phil. And while he basically sleep-walked through pre-season, no one cares because he is delivering when it matters—when points count in the standings.
