Wow. What a game last night. Based on the Leafs' struggles as of late, I was expecting something in the other direction. Toronto played a solid game against the Capitals. They were physical against Ovechkin, capitalized on the powerplay, and even received a solid game in net from Gustavsson. Matt Frattin finally broke out of his drought, and Joe Colborne showed flashes. On top of all of that, Joffrey Lupul added another 4 points in what could be turning into a career year. He's now tied for third in the NHL in scoring. Chris Johnson of the CP (courtesy of the G & M) had this to say in his recap:
Lupul has far exceeded expectations since being acquired from Anaheim in a Feb. 9 trade. The 28-year-old sat out almost a full calendar year with back woes before returning to the Ducks lineup in December 2010 and prospect Jake Gardiner was considered the real prize when Toronto acquired him and Lupul for Francois Beauchemin a couple months later.
While losing Beauchemin hurt (and still does at times), it looks like the Leafs picked up two solid, younger contributors in that deal.
