First Period

Leafs to the power play after Anthony Duclair was called for kneeing on Mitch Marner. Not the best power play ever.

Islanders came on strong after the power play, and the Leafs were trapped defending a lot.

Play David Kรคmpf with William Nylander, and this is what you get:

Good team play on that one from everyone, though.

After one, it was 1-0 Leafs, who delivered poor quality offence in low quantities and won the period.

Second Period

Islanders opened the second with a goal after the Leafs can't clear the defensive zone. Again.

Craig Berube challenged for offside, which was quickly sustained, no goal.

Nylander with a conversation with Lane Lambert after the turnover.

Matt Knies took three swings, and finally scored.

Patrick Roy challenged for goaltended interference from Nylander in the crease, which was sustained after a short review.

Chris Tanev was hit in the face (nose [obviously]) by a puck that deflected off of Jake McCabe's stick.

John Tavares took a holding penalty from a board battle. The power play featured a couple of clock-eating, shorthanded rushes and a lot of shots from the Islanders, that didn't feel dangerous.

Leafs, okay Conor Timmins, turned his back on Jean-Gabriel Pageau and couldn't take the pass away on a cross-crease beauty that led to an easy goal.

Steven Lorentz got revenge a few seconds later on a very good zone-exit pass from Ryan Reaves.

Leafs pinned the Islander and forced them to ice the puck late in the period.

Kyle Palmieri took a very ill-timed penalty after surviving being pinned. Leafs put up another early season style power play with the first unit.

The post-power play shifts were Leafs dominance on display which was very nice to see.

After two, it was 2-1 Leafs, and even considering the disallowed goals, this was a tie period.

Third Period

Anthony Duclair, who clearly hooked Matt Knies, got away with it until Knies did something vaguely like holding his stick so it could be evened up.

An Islanders player dumped Woll behind the net when he "accidentally" clipped his skate.

Leafs looked like they think they're Team Germany or Team Latvia, sitting on a thin lead by never touching the puck.

Once they do, both Nylander and Knies had good looks.

Leafs get lucky when the crossbar makes a save.

Islanders, who have played so very clean in the last few minutes, finally took a penalty for tripping on Matt Knies.

Joe Woll stopped Brock Nelson on a shorthanded break that a driving Morgan Rielly couldn't catch.

Roy didn't pull Ilya Sorokin very early, and almost immediately they had to defend an ENG attempt.

Leafs got a very late power play on a blatant trip that made the Islanders all mad.

Patrick Roy proved his status as the most innovative coach, when he pulled Sorokin for the Leafs power play. Innovation failed. John Tavares with the ENG.

Final score was 3-1 Leafs.

Next game is January 2 on the road in Long Island. See you then!
