Leafs doing their mentor's road trip, and Auston Matthews invited Joe Thornton.

First Period

Pacioretty was knocked down, and the Leafs with no SOG at this point, were short one player defending.

The Leafs busy with the offence, and after one Auston Matthews try, Matt Knies picked up the rebound and tied the game 38 seconds later.

Dennis Hildeby had to step up and make some good saves when the Leafs got leaky.

Oliver-Ekman Larsson with a fairly unusual goal. The D decided to each get a goal in rotation so everyone will shut up about this no goals from the defence stuff.

Garnet Hathaway took a bit of a run at Hildeby and Jake McCabe wanted to make sure he knows he can't do that. McCabe came out of it possibly concussed.

The ref was standing right there and did not blow the whistle until McCabe hit the ice. Bit of kick there from Hathaway, too. Not sure a whistle would have ended that sooner, but it's no time for slackness or indecision.

After one it was 2-1 Leafs.

Second Period

The penalties at the end of the first were offsetting, but since there were two majors in there, the result was five-on-five (I did not know this.) Jake McCabe did not return to the game.

Ivan Fedotov was not required to make a save on the Leafs power play.

He's not wrong.

Hard on the successful PK:

David Kämpf went off for holding, so the Flyers got another try at this power play thing.

Hildeby was not stressed much.

After two it was two goals all, and that period felt very dull and tired.

Yeah, a lot of flat line there.

Third Period

Max Pacioretty with a hit that caused the entire Flyers team to try to mug him. William Nylander had the puck and no defenders, but he lost the puck.

Max Domi with the chicken wing. He didn't get away with it this time like he did last game.

Mitch Marner with an amazing little bit of puck control and Hildeby with one good save and the PK was successful again.

With six minutes to go, the game had bogged down into board battle - transition - board battle - transition.

As seemed destined very early in the second period, this game went to overtime.

Matthews played the same number of minutes as his linemates in this game.

Overtime

Hildeby in beast mode after a Flyers flurry.

Beauty from Morgan Rielly as Matthews was in the right spot to forward a long pass out of the Leafs end.

Leafs win!

Hildeby was very much there when needed all game long.

Next game is Tuesday on the road against the Flyers, see you then.
