Reports that Connor Dewar is also moving are confirmed by multiple sources. But it's not that simple:

In further reports, Dewar is also going to Pittsburgh. Find a man more loyal than Kyle Dubas in the NHL.

The Trade

The Leafs are sending a first to Boston.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired defenceman Brandon Carlo from Boston in exchange for Toronto’s first-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft (top 5 protected), Philadelphia’s fourth-round selection in 2025 and forward Fraser Minten. The Bruins are retaining 15% of Carlo’s salary.

Carlo is only 28, and is under contract this year and the next two at $4.1 million. Obviously something has to happen to make the money work.

One caveat is that Carlo has declined the last two years as the team around him has gotten worse. This is the same conversation as with Scott Laughton – how much is the team, and how much is him. Players under 30 usually don't fall off a cliff though.

He is a defensive defenceman and penalty-killer, and the expectation is he slots in with Morgan Rielly while the McCabe-Tanev pair will remain unchanged.

The side benefit is OEL on the third pair where he won't get overused.

Carlo on TSN: "Little tough to process, but starting to see the opportunity." He admits is shocking that he's been traded to Toronto, but again talked about opportunity given the players on the team.
