The Leafs have added two new members to their coaching staff beyond the previously reported hirings of assistant coaches D.J. Smith, who will reportedly manage the defense, and Jim Hiller, who will reportedly manage the powerplay.
The team has hired Andrew Brewer to join Mike Babcock's staff as an assistant coach. Last season, he served in that role with Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings.
Brewer, 29, had served as Hockey Canada's video coach prior to joining the Red Wings. In that capacity, he worked the Sochi Olympics as well as the 2012, 2013 and 2014 World Championships.
Prior to joining Hockey Canada, Brewer led the University of New Brunswick to two national championships as an assistant coach.
The team also announced it has hired Matthew J. Herring as its new strength and conditioning coach.
Herring, also 29, worked with the San Antonio Spurs during their NBA Championship run during the 2013-2014 season.
He holds a BSc in Sports Science from the University of Wales and MSc in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Edinburgh. He is also a Certified Strength and Condition Specialist.
Herring spent two years as an assistant strength and condition coach with the University of California, Santa Barbara, before starting his own company and eventually landing with the Spurs full-time.
The hirings come amid a complete overhaul of the team's management, coaching, scouting, and developmental staff.
