Free Agent Frenzy is over, now it's just the slow signing of depth players and the harder job: figuring out what it all means. A lot of contracts got signed:
In case you missed it, the Leafs did these things:
Brad Treliving has said there are some depth deals still to be finalized.
This seems on the surface to be everyone the Leafs have space for, but there's got to be moves yet to be made. They have 11 NHL forwards under contract and RFAs Connor Dewar and Nick Robertson unsigned. They have eight potential NHL defenders under contract and three goalies. If you assume that Matt Murray will be sent to the minors, that totals out at just about the cap ceiling of $88 million. Alex Steeves will likely be re-signed but will be in the AHL.
Some other moves will be made and it looks like it could be removing some of the extra defenders. There's no hurry here, the Leafs have the offseason cushion to allow them to do any plausible move in any order, so all of this could sit until training camp just as it is. Cap Space only matters once the season starts. But is smells to me like a forward addition is yet to happen.
We'll find out in time.
Former Leafs with new homes are:
$1.8 million on the Samsonov deal.
Seattle has signed Max LaJoie to a one-year, two-way deal at $775,000.
Noah Gregor signed with the Ottawa Senators for $850,000 on a one-way deal for one year.
The Toronto Marlies defence corps is very thin at the moment with only seven players signed on NHL deals. They may end up using some of the AHL-contracted players, but the Leafs need recall options beyond Conor Timmins, if he even stays with the team.
Expired Leafs free agents still looking are:
- John Klingberg, although he is reported to be not recovered enough from surgery to be looking for a contract yet.
- Mark Giordano
- Martin Jones
- Kyle Clifford
- Dylan Gambrell
Expect more signings over the next couple of weeks. And since we don't know when CapFriendly will vanish, follow the unsigned free agents here:
And the signings here:
In other news, the NHL dumped a steaming pile in the middle of free agency:
There are reports that the Oilers are considering Bowman for their GM vacancy.
Watch for some articles this week on the prospects just drafted and once the dust settles a little more thoughtful look at the Leafs roster.
Chris Tanev and the new goalie tandem are the meaningful players who can impact team success the most.
And that's all from the first day of free agency! Have a great day.
