The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 for the second time this year. James van Riemsdyk led the way with two goals including a hilarious one while Korbinian Holzer's first NHL goal stood up as the winning goal. Ben Scrivens stopped 24 of 26 saves as he pushed his save percentage up to .892. Phil Kessel didn't score because why would God let that happen? He picked up two more assists to give him six on the season.

"It was just kind of a miscommunication. I was skating down and I was going to kind of hold up but I saw them kind of looking at each other like who was going to take the puck and it was just sitting there so I went to go grab it and was able to wrap it in."

Japer's recap had a lot of good things to say about their powerplay which is no surprise as the Leafs' penalty kill dropped to 71.9% and 27th in the league. So much for that vast improvement eh? Luckily, the Leafs take the fifth fewest penalties in the league or they'd be in a lot of trouble. Meanwhile, the Leafs' penalty kill is also 27th at 12.0%. They've missed a lot of opportunities as they've been on the powerplay the second most times in the NHL. Mike Kostka was finally moved off of the top powerplay unit as Randy Carlyle changed some of his deployment.

Looking at the event summary you can see that Carlyle was much more equitable than usual with the ice time. That's probably an artifact of playing back-to-backs. There was more of the same with regards to the use of Nazem Kadri and Matt Frattin while Dion Phaneuf was given a relative breather with only 22 minutes of ice time.

By all accounts, Holzer had a good game and bounced back from last night's troubles. He had a couple of good quotes about his first NHL goal:

[Leafs defenseman Mark Fraser] made a great play on the blue line, out-winning the guy and passed it back to me and I just shot it at the net, and luckily good things happen."
