Whatever they may look like in their current incarnation, the Toronto Maple Leafs are an incredibly storied franchise. Turning 100 is a big deal, and it should be celebrated accordingly. After all, it's not like there are many other NHL franchises that are celebrating that milestone.
Elliotte Friedman dropped something interesting that may or may not come to fruition in this week's 30 Thoughts, though. Buried in there, at #27:
By the way, Toronto fans are not happy Montreal got everything for its 100th anniversary while Los Angeles got All-Star and the draft went to Chicago for theirs. At the NBA All-Star Game, I ran that by a Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment exec who said, "When everything is announced, it will all make sense."
Well, we already know the Leafs have a new logo, and will be getting new uniforms to match. They've gotten a new jumbotron recently, too.
So... what else could there be? A special clause that gets the Leafs two points every single game they play, sweeping the regular season en route to the Stanley Cup? Steven Stamkos? Auston Matthews? Steven Stamkos, Auston Matthews, and a retroactive lottery ball fix that brings Connor McDavid, too?
Or some other big, off-ice event, unique to Toronto and the Leafs to celebrate its storied history? A party with the alumni? The active roster has to come to your house following every loss and personally apologize to you and your loved ones? And do your chores while they're there?
How mysterious. And exciting - but only if it's good, Mr. or Ms. Anonymous MLSE Executive.
