If you’re anything like me, the biggest question on your mind this evening wasn’t “Will Auston Matthews win the Calder Trophy?”—don’t be silly, of course he did. The biggest question of the night, in my mind, was what Auston Matthews would wear to accept the Calder. Would it be safe and boring, or would the young man who has shown his affinity for fun suit linings and excellent hats wear something awesome to pick up his first individual award in the NHL?

The latter, of course.

This outfit is fantastic. It straddles the line perfectly between classic and interesting, a black jacket with a textured, tonal pattern that looks similar to leopard print (if it is leopard print, retire the young man’s number immediately, please), and black slacks. The black tie doesn’t distract from the textured jacket and keeps it from looking busy, but the burgundy pocket square is a fun pop of color to break up the overall monochrome look. It’s great. Award-worthy, even.

If there’s any criticism to be had, it lies in his use of a four-in-hand tie knot, which does not properly fit his collar. Matthews needs to spend the offseason working on his half-Windsor, but he’s clearly determined to succeed, and I have high hopes.

I’d also like to take a moment and praise the dress worn by Matthews’ date, his mother Ema. It’s lovely, classic and simple with a bit of interest added by the sheer sleeves and shoulder cutouts. Most importantly, it’s a flattering shade of blue—in that light, it looks almost Leafs blue (thematic!). Excellent choice.

Extra credit given to Matthews for the polka-dot socks. Those are the socks of a winner.
