Notes: This calculation contains all reported, but unofficial amounts for new one-way contracts. It uses a projected roster of 21, which would grow to 22 with a Mitch Marner signing.

The cap space now is $9.5 million without using LTIR. In the regular season LTIR would give room for one more player at approximately $10 million. You could increase that by running a short roster of 21 players. You could get to 23 players with a contract for Marner under $9.5 million, and the Leafs have a long list of minimum salary options, so the specific players on the above roster is not relevant.

UPDATE: Cap Friendly makes a good point in one of their tweets, that on opening day, Nathan Horton takes up a roster spot on the 23-man roster. So the Leafs have to start out with 22 players at most until they make that move, and then they could recall one player. They will be waiving some non-exempt players or making some paper transactions of someone who is exempt to make that happen. Travis Dermott is also potentially starting the season on IR, although it’s very unlikely Zach Hyman is.

By operating in LTIR space all season, as has always been likely, the Leafs will not accrue space for any deadline deals that don’t involve trading away a player.

At this time, we have no information of the specifics of either contract. We’ll update you when we do.
