Hockey Canada is looking at many non-NHL players this fall to make up their roster for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, and in November they’ll watch 26 players don the red and white to represent Canada at the Karjala Cup.

Canada hasn’t participated in this tournament before and are joining in to help get the Olympic team in shape. To fill our the roster, they looked to many players who used to be Maple Leafs and Marlies in past season.

Forwards

Matt Frattin
(2011-13/2014-16)

Frattin had two stints in Toronto. The first came as a free agent out of the NCAA, after he left North Dakota. He split his first two professional season between the Maple Leafs and the Marlies, and was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings in the Jonathan Bernier trade. Frattin would re-join the Maple Leafs after Toronto sent Jerry D’Amigo and a 7th round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets. That next time would end when he was included in the Dion Phanuef trade to the Ottawa Senators, though he would finish the season with the Marlies. He now plays for Barys Astana in the KHL.

Mason Raymond
(2013-14)

Starting with a PTO in training camp, Mason Raymond was signed by the Maple Leafs before the season and had a career year, improving his status in the NHL enough to get a three year deal with the Calgary Flames the next summer. He played only four games with the Anaheim Ducks last season and is now with SC Bern in the Swiss National League.

Bradon Kozun
(2014-2015)

Kozun became a Maple Leaf when he was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to Toronto for Andrew Crescenzi midway through the 13/14 season. He’d finish the year with the Marlies but ended up playing 20 NHL games with the Maple Leafs over the following season. After that season he became a free agent and sign with Jokerit of the KHL after not being re-signed by the Leafs. He currently plays with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the KHL.

Defenders

Jesse Blacker
(2011-2014)

Blacker was picked 58th overall in the second round of the 2009 NHL draft by the Maple Leafs, from the Windsor Spitfires. He’d never see ACC ice, but played over 100 games with the Marlies before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks, along with a 2014 3rd and 7th round pick for David Staubitz and Peter Holland. Blacker is currently playing with Kunlun Red Star in the KHL.

Goaltenders

Ben Scrivens
(2010-2013)

Scrivens joined the Maple Leafs after wrapped up his NCAA career at Cornell. He would split his time in Toronto between the Leafs and the Marlies, and half his first pro season in the ECHL with the Reading Royals. He was well liked around Toronto, but never got a permanent hold of the back up job, and was sent to the Los Angeles Kings as  apart of the Jonathan Bernier trade. He’s currently playing with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the KHL.

Most of these players were not stars for the Maple Leafs, and after they left Toronto they were usually not long lasting in the NHL.
