The 83rd overall pick came to the Leafs way back when they traded Reimer to San Jose, when Ben Smith came to Toronto the first time. Like 28 years after that trade, the Leafs finally got to use the pick and used it to select Riley Stotts
The Quick Bio
Riley Stotts is a 6’0” center that played for the Calgary Hitmen and Swift Current Broncos last year, putting up only 3 points in 22 games for the latter but 41 points in 47 games for the former. He was ranked at 111 by Future Considerations, but did not make either McKenzie’s top 93 or Canuck Army’s top 100.
You might be worried about the 3 points in 22 games, but he was reportedly buried on a stacked team. He was then moved to Calgary and got a much better opportunity, and he took advantage of it. Here’s what his profile from thehockeywriters.com had to say about him:
In a lot of ways, Stotts is an ideal “middleweight” player. He’s not a big player but he’s not small, nor does he get pushed around a lot. He’s mobile, but he’s not a speedster. He’s good with the puck, but he doesn’t usually dazzle with stick-handling – though he is capable of maneuvering past defenders. You could argue that he doesn’t have a single elite-level attribute, and you’d probably be right, but Stotts’ game is more than the sum of its parts. He works extremely hard, is rarely out of position, and frequently makes his teammates better whether by making a smart defensive play to close off a passing lane or taking the time to wait for holes in defensive coverage to find a teammate. His game has no glaring holes in it, and it’s elevated by his ability to play with pace without losing his attention to detail.
